Janet G. Travell, MD Seminar Series

About the Courses

Effective September 2009, the courses of the Janet G. Travell, MD Seminar Series have been revised. All courses, including the foundations course, now include the practice of intramuscular manual therapy (IMT), also known as trigger point dry needling. The American Physical Therapy Association agrees that the term “intramuscular manual therapy” is the preferred term to use for physical therapy practice. We recommend the term “dry needling” for physician practice and the term “trigger point acupuncture” for acupuncture practice.

The workshops are designed for licensed healthcare practitioners, who are allowed to use dry needling in their practice and jurisdiction, including physicians and physician assistants, dentists, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, nurses, and nurse practitioners.

Massage therapists, body workers, neuromuscular therapists and others are invited to attend courses in our Myopain Seminars Massage Therapy Program (MS-MPT) which do not include needling therapies.  The MS-MTP is scheduled to start in April 2010. For information, please email Mr. Stewart Wild at This site will feature detailed course information soon.

The Travell workshops combine lectures, demonstrations and practical hands-on training of manual therapies and trigger point dry needling. The Janet G. Travell, MD Seminar Series features excellent instructor-student ratios.

Eligibility

Course eligibility chart

  • Workshop MPS-1, Foundations of Trigger Point Examination and Treatment, is the prerequisite course for all other courses in the Janet G. Travell, MD Seminar Series. The concept of IMT/trigger point dry needling will be introduced during the MPS-1 course.
  • Completion of courses MPS-1–MPS-4 is pre-requisite to attend the course MPS-5 IMT/Trigger Point Needling and Certification. Graduates of other training programs are encouraged to contact Myopain Seminars to review eligibility.
  • During the last day of the course MPS-5 IMT / Trigger Point Needling and Certification, participants are eligible to complete practical and written examinations in trigger point dry needling. While the certification examination is not required, successful completion of the examinations is an indication not only of rigorous academic achievement, but also of advanced clinical skills. Note that in some countries, the certification examinations are scheduled several weeks after completion of the MPS-5 course.
