Physical Therapy Evaluation and Management of Temporomandibular Disorders: Past, Present and Future

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) represents a constellation of signs and symptoms involving the temporomandibular joints and/or muscles of mastication. It has been estimated that up to 12% of the general population have experienced signs or symptoms of TMD and that approximately one in five symptomatic individuals will seek treatment. Conservative management, including physical therapy, is the recommended first line of treatment. Dr. Janey Prodoehl describes how physical therapy evaluation and treatment of TMD has evolved into its current evidence supported approach to treatment.
