This two-day course will review different headache types in children, their assessment, and evidence-based treatment options.
The course focuses on the classification of pediatric headaches according to the ICHD-3 (2018) and additional external evidence.
According to “The Global Burden of Diseases Study,” headaches are one of the two most common causes of disability in the 10-24 year age group. Headache prevalences increase from 3%-8% of 3-year-olds to 57%-82% of 8-15-year-old children Yet, many clinicians are not trained or skilled to address pediatric headaches based on the latest scientific evidence.
Students will learn about the mechanism behind chronic or recurrent pediatric headaches and the possible comorbidities.
Students will learn and practice the relevant assessment and treatment of the cranium, TMJ, cervical region, vestibular region, spine, and nervous system in connection with pediatric headaches. The students will be able to recognize clinical patterns, red flags, and the measurement of pediatric (chronic or recurrent) pain.
The course will also address how to educate patients and their parents/caregivers about the nature of the headache, treatment options, lifestyle management, and possible psychological interventions. Students will learn which specific therapy options to consider based on comorbidities, such as psycho-emotional disorders, sleep disorders, and obesity, among others.
